The town was first settled by William Paterson in the 1850s, under the name of Cabbage Tree Hill. Limestone mining led to the discovery of gold in 1869, which caused the area to boom immensely.
The town was named Beaconsfield in 1879. The gold mine closed in 1914, but is currently in the process of being re-opened.
