Battle Mountain is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Lander County, Nevada. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 2,871. Though it has no legal status as a municipality, it still functions as the county seat of Lander County 6.

1 Geography

Battle Mountain is located at 40°38'22" North, 116°56'14" West (40.639431, -116.937342) 1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 2,871 people, 1,053 households, and 731 families residing in the community. The population density is 612.4/km² (1,588.3/mi²). There are 1,455 housing units at an average density of 310.4/km² (804.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 81.30% White, 0.14% African American, 2.54% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 11.81% from other racesThe United States Census Bureau uses the federal government's definitions of race when performing a census. These definitions have and may change between each census. The racial categories are officially described as follows:¹ The categories represent a s, and 3.69% from two or more races. 23.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,053 households out of which 41.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families. Precise definitions vary historically and between and within cultures, but it has been an important concept as a socially sanctioned bond between people who (usually) are living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.28.

The population is spread out with 33.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 104.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.4 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $42,981, and the median income for a family is $50,995. Males have a median income of $45,313 versus $25,417 for females. The per capita income for the community is $16,975. 11.8% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.1% of those under the age of 18 and 20.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
