Bat Yam (בת ים) is a city in Israel, on the central coastal strip, just south of Tel Aviv, and part of the metropolis known as Gush Dan, in the Tel Aviv District.

Bat-Yam was established in 1926 as "Bayit va-gan" (House and garden)- a neighbourhood dedicatad to orthodox Jews. However, the original plan did't come true. During the 1936 riots Bat-Yam was attcked by Arab gangs from its northern neighbour Jaffa and was almost abbandoned. This almost happened again in the 1948 war. In the first decades of Israel independene Bat-Yam grew due to mass immigration, becoming a city in 1959. It's key feature is its beautiful beach, attracring many tourist every summer.

It has today about 185,000 residents (the fifth largest city in Israel)
