Home > Backcountry skiing
Or "off-piste" is skiing in a sparsely inhabited rural region. Backcountry mountains are usually hard to reach locations where conventional means of ascent (ski lifts, cable cars etc.) are not present. Instead, the back country skiier will have to use snow cats, snowmobiles, snow shoes, ski/snow board boots, or skins. Once the peak is reached or any other location on the mountain seems skiable the descent may begin. Backcountry skiing can be highly dangerous due to the avalanche risk, the exaustion from the climb, and often the terrain involved. Backcountry skiing is often associated with " extreme skiing".
