Backa ( Serbian: Бачка Hungarian: Bácska) is an area of the Pannonian plain lying between the rivers Danube and Tisza.

Historically a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the southern part of the area was transferred by the Treaty of Trianon ( 4 June 1920) to the newly created Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later renamed Yugoslavia, today Serbia and Montenegro).

In 1941 Yugoslavian Backa was reincorporated into Hungary by the Axis powers. The Trianon frontier was restored in 1945 with the end of the Second World War, southern Backa becoming part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Today it forms part of the VojvodinaThe Autonomous Province of Vojvodina ( Serbian: Hungarian: Vajdasag Autonom Tartomany Slovak: Autonomna pokrajina Vojvodina Romanian: Provincia Autonoma Voivodina Croatian: Autonomna Pokrajina Vojvodina Rusyn: is the northern province of Serbia. Its capit region of Serbia and Montenegro. Novi SadNovi Sad ( , Slovak Novy Sad Hungarian Ujvidek German Neusatz (city population of 205,378 and some 299,294 in the county in 2002) is a city in northern Serbia, located at 45. 25° North, 19. 85° East on the banks of Danube river, capital of the province Vo, the capital city of Vojvodina, stands on the border between Backa and Srem.
