Aznar I was the great-grandson of Galindo, probably head of the family that led the frankish party in the region (as the son of Galinda, the count Belasco , in Pamplona, but this was opposed by the national basque party led by the Ińiquez family), grand son of Galindo Aznárez and son of Aznar Galíndez. Aznar I governed under frankish influence. Some sources mentions it as count of Jaca. Is suposed that in 820 the allaince with the frankish was reversed, in favour of an alliance to Pamplona and the Banu Qasi of the Ebro Valley, and that lost the county of Aragón and was compensate with Urgell and Cerdańa.
Married with Eneca Garces (modern hypotheis quote a lady from Gascogne), has four sons: Matrona, married with Garcia Galindez, king of Pamplona that deposed Aznar I and ruled Aragón 820- 833; Eilo, Centulf, and Galindo I Aznárez, count of Aragón 844-867.
