Artibonite is one of the nine departments of Haiti. It has an area of 4,984 km² and a population of 1,168,800 (2002). Artibonite is the country's main rice-growing area. The main cities are Gonaïves (the capital) and Saint-Marc . It tried unsuccessfully to declare independence in February 2004.The department is divided in 5 arrondissements:
- Dessalines
- les Gonaïves
- Gros-Morne
- Marmelade
- Saint-Marc
