Army of Darkness ( 1993) is the third installment of the Evil Dead film trilogy, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell. This movie takes a more humorous bent than its predecessors; as a matter of fact, to refer to this movie as comedy would not be inaccurate.

The advertising tag line was "Trapped in Time. Surrounded by Evil. Low on Gas."

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The protagonist, Ash (Campbell), who, during the course of the early part of the film, has unleashed magical forces against the invisible demons who assailed him while fighting them, is thrown back in time to the Middle Ages and finds himself in the role of savior to a population of people about to be attacked by the resurrected dead, or "deadites". Hilarity ensues.

The movie has become a cult classic, and quotes from it have even found their way into the video game Duke Nukem 3D.

The movie had a considerably higher budget than the prior two Evil Dead films.

1 Trivia

The mystical phrase Ash is supposed to speak over the Necronomicon (" Klaatu barada nikto") is taken from the classic Sci-Fi movie The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Two scenes from this film were honoured by director Peter Jackson in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The first occurs when Ash stands upon the parapet of the castle and cries out "who's with me?", followed by the answers "you'll have my sword!" and "you'll have my axe!", the latter being a phrase that Gimli swears. The second occurs when Ash is concocting gunpowder with the help of the Wise men. One of them holds a bag of gunpowder over a candle, only to have Ash forcefully move the man's arm away to prevent the gunpowder from igniting. This same scene is repeated between Saruman and Grima wormtongue.
