The Ankylosauria were a group of Ornithischian dinosaurs that lived around the late Cretaceous period. They are characterised by the bony plates which served as armor and protection against predators. They are split into 2 subfamilies:
- Nodosauria : The earlier form of the group, these had narrow heads and often large spikes protruding from their body. This group includes Nodosaurus, Hylaeosaurus , and Polocanthus .
- Ankylosauria: These are found later in the Cretaceous. They had much wider bodies and thicker armor. They had large bony clubs at the end of their tails which could be swung at predators. This family included Ankylosaurus, Euoplocephalus , and Pinacosaurus .
