It was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of the urban districts of Workington, Maryport, Cockermouth, Keswick and the rural districts of Dockermouth and Wigton .
The name derives from the ancient region of Allerdale, represented latterly by the two ward s of Cumberland, called Allerdale above Derwent and Allerdale below Derwent .
