According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 113.1 km² (43.7 mi²). 94.2 km² (36.4 mi²) of it is land and 18.8 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.65% water.
The reservation borders both banks of the Allegheny River and is within several of the towns in the south part of the county ( South Valley, Cold Spring, Salamanca, Great Valley, Red House, Carrollton, and Allegany ). The City of Salamanca is also within the reservation.
The native american inhabitants of the reservation consider themselves to be a sovereign nation, but actually coordinate their governmental responsibilities with local and federal agencies.

The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males.
The median income for a household in the Indian reservation is $28,971, and the median income for a family is $30,250. Males have a median income of $23,958 versus $20,982 for females. The per capita income for the Indian reservation is $12,681. 22.6% of the population and 17.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.7% of those under the age of 18 and 22.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
The reservation is primarily occupied by members of the Seneca of the Iroquois, but a smaller number of Cayuga,another Iroquois tribe, also reside there.
