Rafsanjani was a key member of the Council of Revolution of Iran at the beginning of the new Islamic Republic, together with Mohammad Javad BahonarMohammad Javad Bahonar ( in Persian), ( 1933 August 30, 1981), was the second prime minister of Iran following the 1979 revolution, and the secretary-general of the Islamic Republic Party. Bahonar was born in Kerman, Iran. He was a cleric who was imprison, Mohammad BeheshtiAyatollah Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini Beheshti ( in Persian), ( October 24, 1928 June 28, 1981) was an Iranian cleric, the secretary-general of the Islamic Republic party, and the head of the Islamic Republic's judicial system. He was assassinated together w, Morteza Motahhari , and Abdolkarim Mousavi Ardabili .
Rafsanjani was also the first speaker for the Iranian ParliamentThe Majlis , which means parliament or assembly in the Arabic language, was the lower house of the Iranian Legislature from 1906 to 1979. After the Islamic Revolution, when the Iranian Legislature became unicameral, the Majlis became the main legislative since the beginning of the Islamic Republic until 1989. In 2000, in the first election after the expiration of his presidential term, he candidated himself for the Parliament elections again, but was not among the 30 representatives of Tehran successfully elected, as announced by the Ministry of Interior . The Council of Guardians then ruled numerous ballots "void" and were able to get him chosen as the 30th candidate. He became a member of parliament again, but resigned before swearing-in as an MP. He explained his reason as "being able to serve the people better in other posts".
Hashemi Rafsanjani is currently the Chairman of the Islamic Republic's Expediency Discernment Council, that resolves legislative issues between the Parliament and the Council of Guardians and advices the supreme leader on matters of national policy. He is also the Deputy Chairman of the Assembly of Experts.
Hashemi Rafsanjani is called by some an Ayatollah, but by some other people as Hojjat ol-Islam.
Rafsanjani has named one of his sons, Yasser , after Yasser Arafat. [1]
