Alexander Archer Vandegrift ( March 13, 1887May 8, 1973)

was a General in the United States Marine Corps. He commanded the American forces to victory at the Battle of Guadalcanal and later was the Commandant of the Marine Corps. For his actions at Guadalcanal, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Vandegrift was appointed Commandant in December 1943 and served through the remainder of World War II.
