He was one of the most important of the Symbolists, and his first book Stikhi o prekrasnoi Dame (Songs to the Beautiful Lady, 1904) created a sensation with its idealized views of feminine beauty and spirit.

His most well known poem is The Twelve a poem which weaves elements of the Christ story and the Russian revolution. It is frequently grouped with the Scythians.

Blok supported the revolutionary movement in Russia and participated in the 1905 Revolution. He expressed his support for the October Revolution with his poem "The Red Guards," sometimes considered his finest work.
