The Aetolian League was a union of Greeks from Aetolia and elsewhere in central Greece. They gained power after the Aetolians defeated the Celts. They were masters of guerrilla warfare. Their main weapons were slings and spears and they organised naval raids using corsairs. To many ancient Greeks they were nothing more than pirates and brigand s but their army had several thousand soldiers. The assembly of the League met only twice per year. Their greatest enemies were Macedon and the Achaean League. The fall of the League came after the Roman war with Syria, when the League had joined the side of the Syrian king.Bibliography
