The Accipitridae is one of the two main families within the order Falconiformes (the diurnal birds of prey). Many well-known birds like hawkThe term hawk refers to birds of prey in any of three senses: Strictly, to mean any of the species in the genera Accipiter Micronisus Melierax Urotriorchis and Megatriorchis''. The widespread Accipiter genus includes goshawks, sparrowhawks, the Sharp-shins, eagleAquila ''Haliaeetus ''Pithecophaga ''Circaetus Scientists argue whether Accipitriformes are a separate order,or belong to the Falconiformes. Eagles are large birds of prey, which are found mainly in the Old World, with only two species ( Bald Eagle and Gos, kitesKites Black-shouldered Kite : Animalia : Chordata : Aves : Falconiformes : Accipitridae Subfamilies Milvinae Elaninae Genera Milvinae Harpagus Ictinia Rostrhamus Haliastur Milvus Lophoictinia Hamirostra Elaninae Elanus Chelictinia Machaerhamphus Gampsonyx, harriersCircus ''Geranospiza ''Polyboroides See Accipitridae for other groups in this family A Harrier is any of several species of diurnal birds of prey which fly low over meadows and marshes and hunt or harry small animals or birds (hence their common name). and Old World vultureOld World vultures : Animalia : Chordata : Aves : Falconiformes †: Accipitridae Genera Gypaetus Gyps Torgos Aegypius Neophron Gypohierax Necrosyrtes † see also: Accipitridae Old World vultures belong to the family Accipitridae which also incs are included in this group. They differ from other Falconiformes in, or falcon family, which is often raised to the level of an independent order.)

Largely because of the explosive impact of modern molecular biology, the current classification of the Accipitridae is confused, with different authorities placing them in different orders. The OspreyThe Osprey Pandion haliaetus is a medium large raptor which is a specialist fish-eater with a worldwide distribution. It is sometimes known by the misnomers Fish Hawk, Sea Hawk or Fish Eagle. It has white underparts and long, narrow wings with four "finge is often placed in a separate family Pandionidae, and the New World vultures are also usually now regarded as separate.
