It was first staged on December 5, 1970, in Varese, Italy. An English translation was published by Suzanne Cowan in Theater Magazine in 1979, and led to a stage adaptation by Richard Nelson, directed by Doug Wager, opening at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. on February 9, 1984.

There was a Channel 4 television adaptation in 1983 which mixed the original Italian setting with anachronistic references to Thatcher's Britain.

In 2003, a new translation by Simon Nye was performed at the Donmar Warehouse theatre, London, starring Rhys IfansRhys Ifans (born 22 July 1968) is a Welsh actor. He was born in Haverfordwest, Dyfed, but raised in Ruthin, north Wales, and his first language is Welsh. He appeared in many Welsh language television programmes before embarking on his film career, as well.
