Home > Ablation

Ablation is defined as the removal of material from the surface of an object by vaporization, chipping , or other erosive processes. Often used in the context of laser ablation , a process by which the molecular bonds of a material are dissolved by a laser.

Ablation is also used in ablative armor and in ablative heat shields to protect things from heat, such as in the Space Shuttle.

In Medicine, ablation is the same as removal of a part of biological tissue, usually by surgery. Surface ablation in the skin (also called resurfacing , because it induces regeneration) can be carried out also by chemicals ( peeling ) and laser. Its purpose is to remove skin spots, aged skin, wrinkles, thus rejuvenating it. Surface ablation is also employed in otorhinolaringology for several kinds of surgery, such as for snoring.

Surface ablation of the corneaThe cornea is the curved, transparent layer that covers the front part of the eye and protects its lower structures. Together with the lens, the cornea refracts light and consequently helps the eye to focus. The cornea gives a larger contribution to the t, for several types of eye refractive surgeryNote: References to organisations in this article do not constitute endorsement of those organisations. Refractive Eye Surgery is any eye surgery used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease the need for glasses. The most common methods to (such as radial keratotomyRadial keratotomy (RK) is a refractive surgical procedure to correct myopia. The procedure consists of numerous radial incisions which extend from the pupil to the periphery of the cornea in a pattern like the spokes of a tire. It was discovered by accide), is now common, using a special excimer laserAn excimer laser is a form of ultraviolet chemical laser which is commonly used in eye surgery and semiconductor manufacturing. The term excimer is short for excited dimer and refers to the chemical gain medium of the laser. The first excimer laser was in system ( LASIKLASIK an acronym for L aser A ssisted I n Si tu K eratomileusis, is a refractive surgery procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. For refraction in metals, see refraction (metallurgy . Ripple tank Refraction is the change in direction of a wave due to a change in velocity. It happens when waves travel from a medium with a given refractive properties, in order to correct refraction errorRefraction error refers to an error in the focussing of light by the human eye. There are two main types: spherical errors and cylindrical errors. These can be corrected by glasses or contact lenses. Spherical errors occur when the optics of the eye (thes, such as astigmatism, myopia and hyperopia.
