Åbenrå (pre-1948 spelling Aabenraa, German Apenrade), is a municipality in south Denmark, in the county of South Jutland on the peninsula of Jutland. The municipality covers an area of 129 km², and has a total population of 22,020.From 1864 to 1920, it was part of Prussia and as such part of the North German Confederation and, from 1871 onwards, part of the German Empire.
A large part of the German minority in Denmark lives in Åbenrå, where their daily Der Nordschleswiger is published.
