A.P. Carter ( December 15, 1891November 7, 1960) was an American Country music musician.

He was born Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter in Maces Springs, Virginia, (Poor Valley), the son of Robert C. Carter and Mollie Arvelle Bays. A.P. was sometimes called "Doc."

On June 18, 1915, he married Sara Dougherty. In 1927, he formed the Carter Family, perhaps the first commercial rural Country music group.

In 1993, A.P. Carter's image appeared on a U.S. postage stampThis article lists people who have been featured on stamps of the United States. For this purpose "featured" is not limited to portraits of the person, but includes any identifiable representation of their works. Thus the "Whistler's Mother" stamp of 1934 honoring the Carter Family.
