The asteroid 1620 Geographos was discovered on September 14, 1951 at the Palomar Observatory by Albert Wilson and Rudolph Minkowski. The asteroid was originally given the provisional designation of 1951 RA. Its name means geographer and it was named in honour of the National Geographic Society.

Geographos is a near-Earth object and a Mars-crosser asteroid. In 1994, during the asteroid's closest approach to Earth in two centuries, a radar study of it was conducted by the Deep Space Network at Goldstone, CaliforniaCalifornia is a state located in the western United States, bordering the Pacific Ocean. The most populous and third largest state in the U. California is both physically and demographically diverse. The state's official nickname is "The Golden State", wh. The resultant images show Geographos to be the most elongated object in the solar systemA generic solar system (or planetary system consists of at least one star and various orbiting objects (such as asteroids, comets, moons, and planets). The term originated to describe the planetary system around Sol, the Latin name for our sun. The planet; it measures 5.1x1.8 km.

Geographos is an S-type asteroidApproximately 17% of all known asteroids are of an S-type (for stony composition. S-types are moderately bright (with an albedo of 0. 22) and consist of metallic nickel- iron mixed with iron- and magnesium- silicates. They dominate the inner to central ma, meaning that it is highly reflective and composed of nickelThis article is about the element nickel. See also nickel (U. coin) and nickel (Canadian coin). Nickel is a metallic chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Ni and atomic number 28. Notable characteristics Nickel is silvery white metal- ironThis article is about metallic iron. Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element and constitutes about 2% of the Earth's crust, and it is the third most plentiful element dissolved in seawa- silicates.
